Sewing

Learn the basics of sewing with a sewing machine.

Practice Sheets

Before you start, please note: A sewing machine has a foot pedal that works like the pedal of a car: the harder you press it, the faster your needle will go.

Consider practicing sewing lines before you thread your machine, sew some straight and curved on these printable pages. Just follow the lines, but try to go faster or slower with your foot pedal.

After you practice following some lines with no thread, go ahead and completely thread your machine. Use a scrap piece of fabric to just stitch top to bottom. Try to go slowly, see how it feels to go faster, test it out with the fabric. Practice using the "reverse" lever as well.

Infinity scarves are a simple first project that can be completed using a basic straight stitch and straight lines. This project works best with a light woven fabric: try Calico Cotton, sturdy but with a little bit of flow. It can be made from lighter or heavier fabrics as well.

Who doesn't love a tote bag? And how amazing to be able to say, "I made it myself"! In the Project Guide tab, you'll find instructions (in blog format and in video) to make a lined bag. You'll practice with your rotary cutter,  using straight stitches, and learn about interfacing.

This project works well with woven fabrics such as quilting cotton.
