Welcome

Welcome to the Print and Cut class!

This class has around 25 minutes of videos to teach you how to make stickers with the Roland Print and Cut Machine.

Anyone can take this class, but in order to use the Print and Cut Machine you need to have a library card and fill  out the Idea Lab agreement. If you don't have a library card, you can get one by visiting any branch with an ID or any other proof of current residence.

With your library card number, please fill out the Idea Lab agreement below. If you have used the Idea Lab before you do not need to fill out the Idea Lab Agreement a second time.

Thank you!

Now that that's out of the way, scroll down to start Part 1. For each part of the class, watch all the videos and read through the additional tabs to complete your certification.

For example in Part 1 there are three tabs to look through. The "Overview" tab, the "Practice image - Pixanay" tab and "Convert file to PDF" tab. Make sure to go through all the tabs in each part to complete this class!

Tabs look like this on the top of the section.

Part 1 - Convert your File

Our printer uses the program VersaWorks 6 to send the information to the printer. VersaWorks needs  a PDF file to send information. In the first section we learn how to convert a file from one type to another.

Take a moment and take a look at the file you would like to turn into a sticker. What file format is that image? Once you know the file type of the image select the appropriate tab above.

Don't know which file type you have? Here are some ways to find out.

With a windows computer, while in your folders, you can see the file type listed on the right hand side.

You can also open the image and it should have .jpeg or .png after the name of the image on the top left of the photo view.

If it is an SVG file it will say Microsoft Edge HTML Document under type.

Another way to tell is when you click on an SVG file, it will open an internet browser to view it.

Let’s find a picture to practice with. We will use the website Pixabay to download a PNG/JPEG or SVG file to practice with in Canva.

Part 2 - Adding Cutlines - VersaWorks

Now that our file is converted to a PDF we need to assign it cutlines. Cutlines are the information in our file that tells the Roland print and cut machine where to cut. We will be adding these cutline using the VersaWorks software.

Is your image a simple square or rectangle shape? Then follow the instructions on the Basic Shape tab.

Is your image a more complex shape? Then follow the instructions on the Outline tab.

Note: the complex shape option will only work if your original file was a SVG graphic. If it was a PNG or JPEG originally it will need to be converted to an SVG file then to PDF OR that file will need to have cutlines added manually in Adobe Illustrator. The instructions for this are not part of this certification class. However, they are available in this guide - see 'Making Cutlines Tab' on the left hand side.

These instructions will show you has to add a basic shape cutline to your design. Basic shape cutlines can be circles, squares, ovals or rectangles.

Follow either the below written or video instructions.
